Support the "Access to Repair Parts Act"

On June 25, 2009, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) introduced the “Access to Repair Parts Act” in the U.S. House of Representatives, H.R. 3059 and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) introduced identical legislation in the Senate, S. 1368. This legislation would guarantee the availability of high-quality, low-cost automotive collision replacement parts.

Joining Rep. Lofgren in support of the House legislation are original cosponsors Reps. Rick Boucher (D-Va.), Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), William D. Delahunt (D-Mass.), Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Texas) and Charles A. Wilson (D-Ohio). Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) is a cosponsor.

The bill is supported by a number of national and regional consumer advocates, automotive groups, repair shops, insurance industry representatives and seniors, many of whom are members of the Quality Parts Coalition. View the full list of supporters here.

For decades, companies have offered high-quality alternative replacement parts to compete with parts produced by the automakers. This competition translates into savings of up to $1.5 billion each year.

As the Consumer Federation of America and fellow advocates for consumer rights indicated in Feb. 2008, keeping prices fair and the automotive collision parts marketplace free by adding a “repair clause” to United States design patent law is critical to preserving consumer choice.
